Last year a group of us arranged a painting holiday starting at Heathrow airport and ending at Manchester airport. We collected very different styles of artists to travel with, so there would be a blend of different influences. Nick Hire and Paul Lexus organised the travel arrangements through Car hire Booking after discussing van hire or car rentals at Heathrow airport. We managed to get a one way hire rental for Heathrow airport to Manchester airport for our journey. Cheap flights could have been arranged to Stansted airport, but Heathrow airport gave us easy access to Windsor and London.
The van hire enabled us to pack all our luggage and painting materials, plus 6 people, enabling us to keep the art conversations going and discuss the paintings while moving from one location to the next. This is the real advantage of doing a painting holiday this way. We chose a Ford minibus for 6 people plus the driver and set off from Heathrow airport.
Paintings were done of Windsor, London and Reading, then we travelled up to Bath and Bristol, where we found some great landscape views near the airport. Jack Rental produced some amazing sketches of the airport terminal and flights coming in, using gouache and crayon in an abstract style reminiscent of the Manchester school. Paul Auto joined us in his BMW which he had hired with Car with a view.com car rental and travelled up to Swindon, Oxford and then dropped his vehicle off at Birmingham airport.
The minibus journeyed on with happy but hired painters to Nottingham, Leicester and then Liverpool. At Liverpool we rented some etching equipment and enjoyed print making scenes just south of Liverpool airport. Our car hire became a very efficient and cheap printing studio! We pooped into Liverpool city centre for a night in a cheap hotel and then moved on up to Manchester airport.
In all the trip cost three days rental hire for the minibus and a few night in cheap hotels. Air tickets to London Heathrow airport to manchester were also cheap, having booked the tickets well in advance. Next year we plan to rent a car for Glasgow airport and drive down through the east of England, past Newcastle, York, Leicester, Luton airport and drop our car hire off at Stansted airport for the return flight home.
