Portrait painters in the UK have recently had a revival. One of the most popular galleries in London is currently The Royal Portrait Gallery. Last year I started a painting of my wife, and since then have started to recieve a series of commissions. I enjoy the contrast of landscape painting in an abstract way, with the detailed and definitive goal of my figurative work. In the last year it has been predominatly paintings of children. This is often seen as the most difficult subject, however I enjoy the challenge and I hope this application is reflected in the work. I use pure oil painting technique with perhaps two or at most three sittings of about an hour each. With children I can cut this time by half with the use of photography. It is often unfare to expect a young person to sit for too long, and much of the work can be done later.
