Impermanence

Mike Heseltine

Inspired by the Fleming tomb in Lincoln cathedral. The Bishop had his tomb made showing two representations of himself. One as the traditional sculpture but another beneath which shows his body decomposing. It is a reminder that however noble you may become in life, no matter how many possessions we cling to, we all experience the same in death. To contemplate Impermanence is to contemplate what is and what is not important in life.

"Zen pretty much comes down to three things.....

everything changes, everything is connected, pay attention."

Jane Hirshfield
