Charcoal portraits can produce a very striking image because of the simplicity of the medium. I tend to limit myself to just the charcoal and use the white of the paper for the highlights within the drawing. The emphasise is on the composition and great drama can be made of the tone and contrast.

I enjoy the simplicity of using just tone without colour. This enables the subject matter to concentrate on compositional values which produces a unique qualtity. The paper can effect the textures and is another subtle contributer to the effects one can achieve in charcoal.

Painters in Scotland including the Scottish colourists have a tradition of figurative drawings. At the moment I enjoy the juxtapositioning of the two styles of my work. The landscape paintings echo the boldness of the countryside, while my charcoal portrait drawings have a more measured approach. I find they compliment each other and create a balance.

Charcoal drawings by painters such as Whistler have influenced me greatly. His drawings managed to convey, as Turner once said, 'a clearness and justice of the ideas they contained and conveyed'. This clarity of thought is suitably expressed in charcoal. There is no room for confusion and the simplicity of the medium helps to produce a direct and clear image.
