Ancestors living in the palm of our hands

A charcoal and pencil drawing on white paper inspired by...."If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are the continuation of each of these people." Thich Nhat Hanh

The drawing was done quickly, keeping the image fresh and simple. I restricted my drawing to just charcoal and a little pencil, so as to focus on the subject matter.

I find the quote by Thich Nhat Hanh very comforting. It hints at the way we are all connected and we do not have 'a life' but we are part of one continuous life. It is amazing to consider that within the palm of our hands, where the lines form unique patterns, this has been created as a result of being connected to all previous generations and all previous life on earth. We are the sum of all those lives, going back to the first single cell existence. We will also continue to be part of all future lives, be it directly or indirectly. Our existence influences the world in some form or other and will always be present. There is no meaningful 'self', we are all connected and part of one life.
